For individuals that have a dog or cat that move from the inside of the home to the outside of the home a regular basis, installing a pet door may prove to offer convenience. In this home improvement guide, you will be introduced to the steps that are necessary to incorporate a small door just for your pet into your home. All it takes is a little work, a couple of basic tools, one or two power tools, and a tad bit of money and time. Having a professional perform this job can be relatively expensive and could result in a bill for hundreds of dollars. However, by doing the work yourself, you can save money and ensure that the pet door is installed to your specifications. The first home improvement step to installing a pet door is to ensure that you get accurate measurements. You will want to start by measuring the width and height of the pet that will be moving in and out of the accessory. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that you purchase a pet door that is approximately three inches larger than the pet that will be using the product in both width and height. You should also take measurements of the area where the pet door will be placed. You will want to ensure that there is ample space for the specific pet accessory that you purchase for your home. Once you have an idea of what size pet door you will require, you may purchase the accessory from a home improvement store. Many pet stores and even some farm and seed stores may also carry these types of products. When you come home from the store and open the pet door that you have purchased, you will find what is referred to as a "template" included in the packaging. You are to take this and place it on the area of the home where the official pet door will be placed. Be sure that this tracing device is taped in an area that is at least three inches from the floor area of the home. Once in the proper location, take a pencil or wood marker and trace the template. Be sure to also highlight the areas that are specific to the placement of the screws. Just outside the template, you will need to pull out the power tools. The best tool is a drill. In each corner, drill a small hole so that the mount that is used to bond the pet door onto the exterior surface of the home can be screwed in. The best drill bit to use is one that measures a half inch. Now that the area for the pet door is established, it is time to bring out the jigsaw. You will want to cut along the tracing. Be very careful when performing work with this type of power tool on home improvement projects. Take the appropriate safety measures and never attempt to rush the work. Many injuries occur annually when it comes to individuals working on improvement projects in the home due to lack of precautionary measures and rushing through jobs. Once the hole has been cut, place the mount for the pet door up by drilling in the screws required at each corner that you marked earlier. Once this is done, attach the actual door and flap. From here, simply introduce your pet to the new level of access that they have! The home improvement steps required for installing a pet door are simple and can be performed in a matter of hours.
