The days of an unscheduled backpack trip across Europe are gone. Today you have to plan for your trip ahead of time. Reservations are made for trains and even the hostels are booked solid. Even some of the sites require booking in advanced. So if you want to be free and relaxed on a backpack trip through Europe then you better do some advanced planning. No matter how you put your trip together, there are some things that are a bit different once you reach Europe. The time is different, the languages are different and the whole world seems to be visiting so everything is booked in advance. 1. Time is not like what they showed you in school. Trains and other transportation will be listed in military time (it goes in 24 hour increments so that 11:00 pm is 23:00). It will take some getting use to and that doesn't even include the time changes that you will encounter anyway. 2. Learn the language - or at least learn some basic phrases and words in the languages of the countries you intend to visit. Although most of the accommodations and transportation sites will have someone who speaks English most people will appreciate your putting forth the effort to learn the local language. 3. Get reservations for accommodations - even if you plan to stay in one of the many hostels around the region. You can usually book your stay online. 4. Book your transportation in advance as well. Trains fill up and you will need to reserve a seat for particular trips even if you do purchase a pass. Things may have changed in Europe over the last few decades, but that doesn’t mean you have to forgo your backpack adventure. You will have to do more planning than before and it is a good idea to learn some of the local languages and even military time. But the dream trip you have always wanted is still possible.
